The novel contains two surprises, an appearance by the hitherto unknown Achille Poirot and a romantic interest for Hercule Poirot. At the end of the book Poirot announces his intention to retire and maybe to grow vegetable marrows. This might then be presumed to have predated Poirot's case "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" in which he is retired and attempting to grow his marrows.Murder methods:
