Death Comes as the End

It is 2000 BC in Egypt and Imhotep the Ka-Priest brings home his beautiful young concubine Nofret. But not all the members of his family welcome her and when she is found dead it is Imhotep’s daughter Renisenb who suspects it might not have been an accident. This death unleashes the greed and hate that have been building up within the family and the horrific events that follow tear it apart.

Publishing: The novel was published in 1945 by William Collins Sons & Co. in London, and in 1944 by Dodd, Mead & Co. in New York. The novel has not been adapted for stage or screen.

Notes and reviews

The author provides an opening note to explain the motivation for the choice of setting and to explain that the story and chapter titles are keyed to the agricultural calendar of the time. The subject matter of the novel was suggested to Agatha Christie by her friend Professor Stephen Glanville, who she consulted throughout the writing of the book for historical information on the period.
