I agree that "Cat among the pigeons" was adapted very successfully. Having recently re-read the novel, there's a HUGE amount of plot in it (unlike "Third Girl" for instance where nothing really happens!), so I thought they would have to make some changes. As it stands, the denouement for this episode was probably one of the longest they've ever done, I think - as there was so much for Poirot to explain!
SPOILERS:
Like you , I wasn't that bothered about the deletion of Miss Vansittart who I found a rather dull character in the book. And also the fact that Chaddy didn't actually succeed in killing Miss Rich made her a more sympathetic character and so her death was more moving.
I loved the cast. I thought Elizabeth Berrington was wonderfully unpleasant as Miss Springer, and Natasha Little (who I loved in "This Life") was perfect as Ann Shapland - her reaction when she was revealed as the murderer was just fantastic. And I also thought Lois Edmett - in what seems to be her TV debut - was so full of personality and cheekiness as Julia Upjohn.
A big thumbs up from this viewer!

While I didn't like CotP much, (haven't seen the movie yet), I do think that the novel makes a good movie. When it comes out here on DVD, I'll definitely watch it.

I've watched the CatP film yesterday. I liked it. Chaddy reminded me of a professor at my uni.
Though I don't like that the filmmakers kept the disappointing resolution with no deduction involved. Adding some deduction to the revealing of the murderer is what the original novel badly needs, and I would only welcome a minor plot change or two that enables some deduction to actually take place. These are the changes that the screenwriters should do to Christie, not adding Lesbian Nazi Nuns.

I watched Cat among the pigeons and thought it was well made. I didn't like the book that much, it was just ok. I did like the adapt scene where the blackmailer goes to meet the killer in the dark..

I've been very pessimistic about "Cat Among the Pigeons", episode 2 in the newest Poirot series. I've just finished watching it, and I must say, my pessimism was completely proved wrong!
When the writer, in an interview, said he'd treated the story with care adapting it, I scoffed. I criticized, and came up with prophecies that CATP would be another "Cards on the Table". I aso got into extensive arguments defending these viewpoints. Now that I've seen the movie, I must admit I was completely wrong. The screenwriter has, indeed, taken great care in adapting the story for TV.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
Users may remember I was disappointed at the deletion of Miss Vansittart. Her murder is still in the adaptation, only Eileen Rich is used instead. It makes sense, actually, to have changed this, because 3 rivals for one position as headmistress may have been to much to capture in 90 minutes.
I was also pleased that Katie Leung's character, Hsui Tai Wan, is extremely minor, and almost of no importance to the plot.
Another thing I really liked was the ending. Miss Chadwick jumping into the way of the revolver to protect Miss Bulstrode was one of my favourite bits in the entire novel, and this scene was filmed very well.
END OF MAJOR SPOILERS!
All in all, I am very pleased at the second installment of the 11th season of "Poirot". "Cat Among the Pigeons" has not been ripped to shreds after all! :)
